Magnetic fridge mount for 7 inch touch displays

Gives a small touch display a spot on the fridge door, so a recipe, a calendar or a smart home panel is at eye level. The display drops into a open-fronted frame with a gap at the bottom for the cable. Set your display's width, height and depth to fit.

136.6 x 154.9 x 23.8 mm at the defaults (upright), so it fits a 180 mm bed. The side rails cover 75% of the display's height by default (Cover slider, 50 to 100%), so the top of the display stands above the frame: 47 mm of a 189.5 mm display. Sideways, a 189.5 x 120 mm display gives a 206.1 x 102.8

Hardware

  • 6 × Neodymium disc magnet 10 x 3 mm · Count at the default sliders. The count changes with the display's size and weight, the magnet size and rated pull, the skin, the safety factor and the slide factor. The check 'Enough magnets to stop
  • CA (super) glue or 2-part epoxy · A drop in each pocket keeps the magnets in when the display is out.
  • USB-C power lead · Leaves through the 16 mm notch in the bottom lip. Move the notch with the Cable notch position slider.

Assembly

  1. Before printing, hold one magnet against your fridge door to check the door is magnetic. Many stainless fronts are not.
  2. Choose upright or sideways. Enter the display's width and height as it will hang on the door (for a 189.5 x 120 mm display sideways, set width 189.5 and height 120), then its depth and weight, the magnet size, and the seller's rated pull per magnet. The model places the pocket count it needs. Read t
  3. Print the cradle flat on its back with no supports.
  4. Put a drop of CA glue or epoxy in each pocket and press a magnet to the bottom of the pocket from the front. Let the glue cure.
  5. Put the cradle on the door with the bottom notch facing down, then press it flat.
  6. Plug the power lead into the display, then slide the display down between the rails until it sits on the bottom lip, with the lead dropping through the notch.
  7. To take the display out, slide it straight up out of the open top. To remove the cradle, slide it down or sideways off the door rather than pulling it straight off.

Good to know

  • Holding power is a checked calculation in the Loftsmith engine, not a hold test. Rated pull figures vary between sellers. Test it on your door with the display in before you trust it.
  • How the count is worked out: a magnet resists sliding on a vertical door with only a share of its rated pull, the slide factor (0.2 by default, adjustable from 0.15 to 0.25). The plastic between magnet and door costs more pull. The model estimates this as half the pull for every 0.1 x the magnet's d
  • Many stainless-steel fridge fronts are not magnetic. Thin door steel also holds less than the thick plate used for datasheet ratings. The default safety factor of 4 is there to cover that and door swings.
  • The defaults are just one size (120 x 189.5 x 15 mm, 250 g, upright). 7 inch displays vary, so measure yours and set the sliders.
  • Wide sideways displays need a bigger bed. The cradle is the display width plus about 17 mm, so a 189.5 mm wide display gives a 206.1 mm cradle and the 200 mm maximum gives 216.6 mm. That needs a 220 mm or 256 mm bed, not a 180 mm A1 mini.
  • By default the rails cover 75% of the display's height, so the top of the display stands free above the frame. Set Cover to 100% to frame it full height. At the default 189.5 mm height that makes the cradle about 202 mm tall, and up to 207.8 mm at the 195 mm maximum height. Either needs a bed larger
  • The bevel lip covers 3 mm of the display's front edge on each side and the bottom, so a screen with less than 3 mm of bezel will have its edge covered.
  • Display depth must include anything fixed to the back of the display, such as a board or connector. The back sits flat on the frame.
  • The magnet pockets have a fixed 0.2 mm clearance (pocket = disc diameter + 0.2 mm). If your printer prints holes small, the discs may need a firm press.
  • PLA softens at about 55 °C. Use PETG if the cradle sits near a warm vent or the fridge's back edge.
