Desk H-shifter 6+R for sim racing (KY-023, Pro Micro)

A real H-pattern gear lever for your sim racing desk, with six gears and reverse. The stick moves through a slotted gate on top, and a clamp underneath grips the table edge. Change the knob size or the gap between lanes to suit your hand.

Hardware

  • KY-023 joystick module · Pull the thumb cap off first
  • SparkFun Pro Micro (33 x 18 mm)
  • 22 × M3 heat-set insert · 14 in the base, 3 in the pivot block, 1 in the lever top, 4 in the clamp cheeks
  • 4 × M3 x 6 screw · KY-023 to its standoffs
  • 4 × M3 x 25 socket screw · Pivot block and deck into the base pillars
  • 9 × M3 x 8 countersunk screw · Pivot cap 3, gate lid 4, board strap 2
  • M3 x 25 countersunk screw · Knob to lever
  • 4 × M3 x 8 screw · From inside the base down into the clamp cheeks
  • 2 × M6 x 40 hex bolt · Glued into the thumb knobs
  • 2 × M6 nut · Pressed into the clamp jaws
  • 2 × 1.75 mm filament offcut · Pins for gluing the lever halves
  • Superglue or epoxy · Lever halves and thumb knob bolts
  • 5 × Dupont wires · KY-023 to the Pro Micro
  • Micro-USB cable

Assembly

  1. Press the heat-set inserts into the base, pivot block and clamp cheeks. Screw the cheeks under the base with four M3 x 8 screws from inside, then press the M6 nuts into the jaws.
  2. Screw the KY-023 to its standoffs with four M3 x 6 screws, pull its thumb cap off and press the stem extender onto the stem.
  3. Place the Pro Micro in its bay, wire it to the KY-023, fasten the board strap and plug in the USB lead through the back wall.
  4. Lay the coupler plate on the deck and bolt the deck and pivot block down with the four M3 x 25 screws before the lid goes on.
  5. Glue the two lever halves with filament pins, press the insert into the lever top, seat the lever ball and fix the pivot cap.
  6. Fit the gate lid, then screw the knob to the lever.
  7. Glue the M6 bolts into the thumb knobs, thread them through the jaws and fit the pads.
  8. Slide the clamp over the desk edge and tighten the thumb screws.

Good to know

  • Not printed or physically tested yet: every number here comes from the model's checks and estimates. Print one part first and test the fit.
  • The KY-023 stem, pivot height and hole spacing are estimates. They vary between sellers, so measure yours and set the sliders. Test-fit the coupler plate, stem extender and pivot block before printing the rest.
  • Nothing models the spring return or the coupler's friction, and there are no detents, so this will not feel like a notched shifter. Try it before committing to the full print.
  • Strength figures are estimates for PLA with load along the layers, and don't cover creep or fatigue. The knob screw assumes a heat-set M3 holds about 300 N. Don't slam it repeatedly until you've tested yours.
  • Firmware and the pin mapping are not part of this design: gears must be read from the stick's X and Y positions in your own code.
