Closet shelf divider with knob clamp for 12-40 mm shelves

Stops your stacked sweaters and towels from leaning into each other on a closet shelf. It clamps on the shelf edge with a small knob underneath, so there's no drilling. Change the shelf thickness and the height to fit your own shelf.

Parts

  • divider · PLA · Lying on its side (flat face down), so the jaw bends along its layers

About 46 g, about 65 min at 2 walls/15%. Prints 170 x 170.5 mm on the bed at the defaults, so it fits a 180 mm bed. No supports; the bolt hole is a teardrop so it prints sideways. PLA because the clamp is a stiff jaw squeezed by a screw rather than a flexing spring, and a closet stays well under PLA

  • knob · PLA · Rounded grip face up, hex pocket open on top

About 3 g, about 10 min. Six-lobed 26 mm grip; the M6 bolt head sits in the hex pocket.

Notes
The divider prints on its side, so its whole outline is one flat print with straight walls and 0% overhang. The divider and knob fit on one 256 mm plate. On a 180 mm bed at the defaults, print the knob separately because the divider takes up almost the whole plate.

Hardware

  • M6 x 30 hex head bolt · Turns with the knob; its flat end presses the shelf underside.
  • M6 hex nut · Slides into the side slot in the lower jaw; the bolt holds it in place.
  • Felt or rubber dot, about 1 mm (optional) · On the bolt end, to keep it from marking a soft or veneered shelf.

Assembly

  1. Slide the M6 nut into the slot through the side of the lower jaw, with its flats against the slot walls, until it lines up with the bolt hole.
  2. Push the M6 x 30 bolt through the knob from the grip side so the hex head seats in the hex pocket.
  3. Thread the bolt up through the jaw into the nut. Leave the tip at or below the jaw's top surface.
  4. Slide the divider onto the front edge of the shelf, with the frame on top and the jaw underneath, until the nose meets the edge.
  5. Turn the knob until the bolt touches the underside of the shelf, then give it a light extra turn by hand. Do not use tools.

Good to know

  • Each print is set for one shelf thickness. It fits shelves from 3 mm thinner to 2.5 mm thicker than the slider value, so measure your shelf first.
  • It does not fit wire (ventilated) shelving. It needs a solid shelf with a plain front edge. A lip, face frame or support cleat within about 45 mm of the front edge underneath will block the jaw.
  • Clamp force and tilt resistance are engine estimates based on assumed hand torques (about 0.1 N·m snug, 0.3 N·m firm). The tilt check covers a 3 kg stack leaning 5°. It is not a bookend for heavy books.
  • Tighten by hand only. Pliers or a wrench on the knob can crack the PLA jaw.
  • A bare steel bolt end can mark soft wood or veneer. A felt dot on the tip prevents this.
  • PLA softens around 55 °C. That is fine in a closet, but keep it away from heaters.
  • Not yet printed or tested on a real shelf. The fit and grip need a test print.
