From the Loftsmith Workshop

6'0" swallow-tail surfboard core

The shaped blank for a six-foot swallow-tail surfboard, ready to glass into your own board. It comes in 18 parts, so it prints on a normal bed, and there's a small hole near the nose for a leash. Change the length, thickness or swallow notch to suit your waves.

Notes
Each half lies on its flat centre face, so it has a big footprint and needs no brim.

Hardware

  • 6 × FCS-style fin plug (dual tab) · Two per fin. Pockets are 16 x 29 mm with a pointed roof so they print without support; the bedding resin fills the roof. Set the Plug pocket sliders to your actual plugs first.
  • Leash plug (surfboard cup) · 25 mm wide x 22 mm deep pocket, set in resin.
  • 2 × Fibreglass cloth, ~200 g/m² (6 oz) · 2 layers on the deck and 1-2 on the bottom, lapped around the rails and into the notch.
  • Low-heat (slow) laminating epoxy · About 1-1.5 kg. PLA softens around 55 °C.
  • Gore-Tex surfboard vent plug · Recommended for a hollow core.
  • Thickened epoxy for joining sections

Assembly

  1. Dry-fit first. Glue section-1-left and section-1-right together on their centre faces with the 2 dowels, and check that the swallow points line up.
  2. Glue each next pair of halves together, then slide that station onto the previous one so its pegs go into the grooves. Work from the tail to the nose on a flat surface so the rocker stays true.
  3. Sand the joints, the rails and the inside of the notch smooth. Fill any gaps with epoxy and microballoons.
  4. Set the 6 fin plugs and the leash plug in epoxy, using a jig for toe and cant. Fit the vent plug.
  5. Glass the bottom, then the deck, lapping the cloth around the rails and into the notch. Hot coat and sand.

Good to know

  • This build only checked the default settings. I sized the new slider ranges from the numbers, so drag a few sliders to their ends on the Adjust tab and make sure the checks stay green.
  • The weight budget is now 1.75x a foam board of the same size, not a flat 4.5 kg. The stock board comes in at about 4.47 kg, heavier than a ~2.8 kg foam board. The 'Form reads boxy' warning on sections 2-5 is the square inside corners where the end walls meet the shell. They are hidden under the glas
  • The FCS pocket sizes come from forum posts, not official specs. PLA softens around 55 °C. The board's strength comes from the glass and hasn't been tested, so check the fin and tail areas after your first sessions.
