SKÅDIS-compatible pegboard insert for picture frames

Turns an ordinary picture frame into a tidy board for keys. Slotted panels sit inside where the photo would go, and the little hooks hang from them. It prints in four tiles that join together, so set your frame's inside size and your printer's bed size.

Notes
Default A4 board, four tiles: about 215 g and 5 h 1 min in PLA at 2 walls/15%. At 3 walls/15% it is about 291 g and 6 h 48 min. Each tile prints face down in 68 to 78 min, so the visible face is the smooth bed side. Print a single tile first and test a hook in it before printing the rest. PLA suits

Hardware

  • Picture frame with the glass removed: inside (picture) size 100 to 320 mm each way, rebate at least 5 mm board + back ga · Not included. The board replaces the glass and picture. The frame's own backing board and clips hold it in. The Rebate depth and Backing board sliders size the back rails so the stack fills the rebate
  • 3 × SKÅDIS hooks or other SKÅDIS-compatible accessories · Any number. The hook fit was checked against a simplified SKÅDIS-style hook model; real IKEA accessories may differ slightly in shape.

Assembly

  1. Measure the frame: its inside (the size of the glass or picture it takes), how far the front lip overlaps the picture, the rebate depth from the back of the lip to the back of the frame, and the thickness of its backing board. Enter them in the Frame inside width/height, Frame lip overlap, Rebate de
  2. Print one tile and check that a SKÅDIS hook goes in and drops into place. If it is tight, raise Slot clearance; if the tiles are too tight or too loose, adjust Tile joint clearance.
  3. Print the remaining tiles face down with no supports.
  4. Lay the tiles face down on a table in their grid (row A at the bottom, column 1 on the left as seen from the front) and press each dovetail straight down into its socket.
  5. Take the glass and picture out of the frame. Drop the joined board in from the back, face first, so its edges sit under the frame lip.
  6. Put the frame's backing board back on top of the rails and close the clips. The backing board and lip clamp the tiles together.
  7. Hang the frame. To fit a hook, push its tail through the top of a slot, then let it drop so the tail hooks behind the board.

Good to know

  • Slot size and pattern (5 x 15 mm slots, columns 20 mm apart, slots 40 mm apart in a column, neighbouring columns offset 20 mm, 5 mm board) come from community measurements, not an IKEA spec sheet. Print one tile and test a real hook before printing the rest.
  • The hook fit was checked against a simplified SKÅDIS-style hook model; real IKEA accessories may differ slightly in shape.
  • Not for more than 2 kg per hook. That is what the board's slot edges were checked for; the hooks themselves have their own limits.
  • Frame inside sizes from 100 to 320 mm each way only. The board splits into at most 2 x 2 tiles so the frame lip holds every tile; it is not for larger frames.
  • The dovetails only locate the tiles. The frame's lip and backing board hold them together, so the board is not meant to hang without a frame.
  • The frame's rebate must be at least 5 mm (board) + back gap + backing board thickness deep, and the back gap must be at least 5 mm. That is 13 mm minimum with a 2.5 mm backing board and 16 mm at the default settings. Many thin frames are shallower, so measure first.
