Wall spool holder with self-centring cones

Gets a filament spool off the desk and onto the wall, where it can turn freely as you print. A wall plate with two screw holes holds the arm, and a round knurled knob on the end locks the spool in place. Set your spool's width and hole size to fit.

Notes
Standard PLA profile. If the bearings are too tight or loose, nudge the Bearing seat extra slider (0-0.4 mm) on Adjust and reprint the hub.

Hardware

  • 2 × 608 bearing (8 x 22 x 7 mm) · Standard skateboard bearings.
  • M8 x 130 mm hex head bolt · Length at default sliders; the build log names the right length if you change spool width or hole size.
  • M8 hex nut · Captive in the bracket's side slot.
  • M4 x 20 mm thumb screw (or any M4 screw) · Length at default sliders (12-30 mm depending on cone size; see the build log).
  • M4 hex nut · Captive in the front cone.
  • 2 × Countersunk wood screw, about 4 x 40 mm · Use wall plugs suited to your wall.

Assembly

  1. Slide the M8 nut into the slot in the side of the bracket's arm.
  2. Screw the bracket to the wall with the two countersunk screws.
  3. Press one 608 into each end of the hub until each stops on its ledge, with the spacer between them.
  4. Push the M8 bolt head into the knob until it sits on its seat, then turn the knob until the hub is snug but still spins freely.
  5. Fit the M4 nut and thumb screw into the front cone.
  6. Slide the spool on until it sits against the back cone.
  7. Slide the front cone over the knob into the spool's hole until the spool feels centred, then tighten the thumb screw.

Good to know

  • Slider ends were verified by working through the script's checks, not by a separate build at each end, so drag any slider on Adjust to see it rebuild and confirm.
  • The bearing press fit and how well the thumb screw holds the front cone are untested; try the hub and front cone with a real spool first.
