Print-in-place explosion gift box with card pockets
A little gift box that opens flat into four panels, so the surprise is the unfolding. The panels swing on small knuckle hinges, and a red lid with a ribbon pattern sits on top. "for you" is cut into the base. Change the inside width and height to fit your gift.

How to print it
Parts
- base · PLA · Flat, floor down, as modelled
Print-in-place group 'box' with the four walls: one flat 166 x 166 mm object at the defaults. Carries the hinge pins and the engraved message. About 15 g, 25 min.
- wall-front · PLA · Flat, pocket face up, as modelled
Part of the 'box' print group, hinged to the base. About 10 g, 18 min.
- wall-back · PLA · Flat, pocket face up, as modelled
Part of the 'box' print group. About 10 g, 18 min.
- wall-left · PLA · Flat, pocket face up, as modelled
Part of the 'box' print group. About 9 g, 16 min.
- wall-right · PLA · Flat, pocket face up, as modelled
Part of the 'box' print group. About 9 g, 16 min.
- lid · PLA · Upside down: top on the bed, rim up (printRotate 180 degrees)
86 x 86 x 14.4 mm at the defaults, about 26 g and 37 min including the ribbon. Separate plate from the box.
- lid-ribbon · PLA (second colour) · Prints inside the lid's first 0.6 mm (filament 2)
Flush ribbon-and-bow inlay. About 1 g plus about 1.6 g purge for 3 colour changes. Turn the Ribbon toggle off for a single-colour lid.

- Notes
- Default box at 2 walls/15%: about 83 g and 2 h 20 min in total (box group about 53 g, lid about 26 g, plus purge for the ribbon colour). Print the flat box with no brim and keep elephant-foot compensation on, so the bottoms of the hinge knuckles stay separate. Before committing, print the Loftsmith
Assembly
- Print the flat box (base and four walls) and the lid. While the box is still flat, flex each wall up and down a few times to free its hinge.
- Slide a card or note into each wall pocket from the open top edge of the wall, face out, until it rests on the bottom lip.
- Set the gift on the floor of the base. The message is engraved under it.
- Fold the four walls up. The two long walls close over the ends of the two short ones.
- Hold the walls upright and lower the lid straight down over them until it sits on the wall tops. The 12 mm rim keeps the walls closed.
- To open, lift the lid straight up. Each wall leans out from its hinge and falls open to show the gift and the cards.
Good to know
- Check the hinges on your printer first: the gaps are modelled, but whether the hinges free on the first print depends on your printer and filament. Print the hinge tester at the same clearance before you print the box.
- The walls fall open under their own weight only: each one's centre of mass is about 2.8 mm outboard of its hinge. A stiff or rough hinge may leave a wall standing until you nudge it.
- Pockets take cards up to about 0.9 mm thick. The gift card / Instax mini option holds an 86 x 54 mm card in landscape, so a portrait Instax photo sits sideways. That option enlarges the box to at least 86.6 x 87.6 x 65 mm inside and about 223 mm flat, which needs a 256 mm bed.
- Carry the closed box from underneath. The lid only holds the walls by a light fit, and the hinge check assumes a gift of no more than 0.5 kg.
- PLA softens at about 55 °C, so do not leave the box in a hot car or in direct sun.
- This is a gift box, not a toy. The hinge pins and small parts are not meant for young children.
